Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, John Joseph Mearsheimer stressed that resuming attacks against Iran would bring no achievements for Donald Trump.
Trump’s most important goal was to get the Chinese to help end the war with Iran, he added.
He is desperately looking for a way out of this crisis, but so far he has not been successful, he noted
He likely hoped China would pressure Iran into reaching an agreement, but no progress has been made in this regard, he noted.
Trump realized that China is not going to bring Iran to its knees, he said adding that Beijing wants the war to stop, but it does not have the ability to end it.
The only way to end the war is through an agreement with Iran, Mearsheimer said.
The United States may be able to obtain some concessions regarding the nuclear program, but not major ones, he added.
He stressed that the Persian Gulf countries are also worried, because they know that if the war resumes, their oil and critical infrastructure could be targeted.
Iran, Russia, and China now share common interests in confronting the US, he said.
The unprovoked US-Israeli war on Iran began on February 28 with air raids that assassinated senior Iranian officials and commanders and targeted civilian infrastructure, residential areas, educational institutes, and historical and cultural sites.
In response, the Iranian Armed Forces unleashed 100 waves of successful strikes against sensitive and strategic American and Israeli targets throughout the region.
