Baqaei: US’s acts turn FIFA World Cup 2026 into one of most politicized sporting events

Tehran, IRNA – Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei has regretted that one of the most politicized sporting events in the FIFA World Cup is going to take place due to US’s actions.

Addressing his regular press conference on Monday, Baqaei said the previous round of World Cup in Qatar was very well organized, and it was also a good experience for us.
Now three countries are jointly hosting this event, and it is regretful that it would be one of the most politicized sporting events due to US’s actions, he added.
He appreciated Mexico for its cooperation to host the Iranian national team and said the US’s actions must be attributed to their hostility toward the Iranian people.
A significant part of FIFA’s regulations and the host government’s commitments have already been violated, including the failure to issue visas for a significant number of team members who, according to FIFA regulations, should have been granted visas, Baqaei stated.
He offered his regret over US’s misconduct and harassment of the Iranian people.
Baqaei had earlier addressed speculations regarding the participation of the Iranian national football team in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, emphasizing that the United States is obligated to facilitate seamless entry for the team.
