Iraqis prepare for historic memorial services honoring Iran’s martyred Leader

Tehran, IRNA – Iraq is making extensive preparations to host memorial ceremonies for the martyred Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, in the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala, with authorities expecting one of the largest public gatherings in the country’s recent history.

The ceremonies, scheduled for Wednesday, have prompted unprecedented coordination among government agencies, religious institutions, tribal leaders, volunteer organizations, security forces, and service providers.
Officials describe the event as both a historic occasion and a symbol of solidarity between the Iranian and Iraqi peoples.
According to Iraqi media, planning meetings and logistical operations are underway across Baghdad, Najaf, Karbala, Basra, Dhi Qar, Diwaniyah, and other provinces.
Special committees have been formed to manage transportation, crowd control, media coverage, and public services, while infrastructure around key ceremonial sites has been expanded to accommodate large numbers of mourners.
Under the announced program, the coffin will arrive at Najaf International Airport before being welcomed by senior officials, religious scholars, and thousands of mourners.
The remains will be transferred to the shrine of Imam Ali (PBUH) for prayers and a farewell ceremony, after which the funeral procession will proceed toward Karbala.
The procession is expected to pass through Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis Street before reaching the shrines of Imam Hussein (PBUH) and Hazrat Abbas (PBUH), where the main commemorative ceremony will be held.
Seven Iraqi provinces, including Baghdad, Najaf, Babylon, Dhi Qar, Basra, Wasit, and Maysan, have declared Wednesday an official holiday to enable broad public participation.
The Popular Mobilization Forces (Hashd al-Shaabi) announced full security and logistical readiness, with personnel deployed along the Najaf-Karbala route.
Service centers will provide accommodation, meals, drinking water, and medical assistance, while ambulances and emergency teams will remain on standby throughout the ceremonies.
Officials expect millions of mourners to attend, describing the event as a demonstration of unity, resistance, and the enduring ties between the Iranian and Iraqi nations.
