The announcement was made by Deputy Justice Minister for Human Rights and International Affairs Askar Jalalian on Sunday.
“The Secretariat of the Committee for the Transfer of Convicts at the Ministry of Justice, in cooperation with other relevant bodies, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Judiciary’s International Affairs Office, and the Khuzestan Province Justice Department, facilitated the transfer of 159 Iranian prisoners from prisons in Iraq to Iran,” he said.
Jalalian added that the number of Iranian prisoners held in Iraq has increased recently due to a rise in the number of Iranians traveling to the Arab country. He said failure to comply with Iraq’s laws and regulations, as well as the country’s strict response to violations, had also contributed to the increase in the number of Iranians being convicted in Iraq.
“Complying with the laws of the destination country and respecting its regulations are essential when traveling abroad. Failure to do so can result in arrest, lengthy prison sentences, hefty fines, and irreversible consequences for individuals and their families,” he noted.
