Iran says its position on Palestinian self-determination unchanged since 1947

Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s principled position on the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination has remained unchanged since 1947, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said on Tuesday.

“If violations of the right to self-determination, the usurpation of land and genocide are considered permissible in the international system, no rule or norm in the world will remain sustainable,” Baqaei said at a national conference on the Palestinian issue.

Rejecting attempts to portray Iran’s position as purely ideological, he said Tehran’s support for Palestine stemmed from its civilizational identity and longstanding opposition to oppression and injustice.

He stressed that Palestinians must be allowed to exercise their right to self-determination without foreign interference, adding that all governments were legally obligated to support the realization of this fundamental right.

Baqaei said countries defending Palestinian rights were fulfilling their binding obligations under international law, while those acting against them were committing clear violations of human rights and international principles.

He also criticized international inaction over the continuing genocide in Palestinian territories, saying efforts by international judicial bodies to hold Israeli regime officials accountable were facing obstruction and passivity.

The spokesperson stressed that the Palestinian issue went beyond political calculations and was fundamentally a humanitarian matter, adding that the displacement of people, aggression and genocide could not be accepted by the Iranian nation.
