Iran to equip 12,000 schools with solar power plants

Sanandaj, IRNA – Iran plans to equip 12,000 schools nationwide with solar power plants in the first phase of a renewable energy project, with the required equipment already dispatched to the provinces, an official says.

Jafar Mohammadnejad Sigaroudi, deputy for investment and development at the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Organization (SATBA), said on Wednesday that the projects could be completed within 45 days, with priority given to qualified local contractors.

The official added that Iran’s total renewable energy capacity has increased from around 1,250 megawatts at the beginning of the current administration to more than 6,300 megawatts, despite sanctions and other constraints.

In Kurdistan Province, 406 schools have been identified for the solar power project, with construction work already underway at 32 schools, he added.

Sigaroudi further noted that the province’s solar power capacity has exceeded 25 megawatts, up from 16 megawatts in March 2025, with a target of reaching at least 40 megawatts by March 2027.
